A DAY ON THE FARM
is only available on Weekdays!
For the first time The Densmore Farm is opening their doors to the public in a means to help educate young children. Our focus will be meeting standards for Life Science for Kindergarten – Third Grades. Lessons will be taught by a Certified Educator with a Bachelors of Science in Biology.
Kindergarten Standards
SKCS5. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.
SKL1. Students will sort living organisms and non-living materials into groups by observable physical attributes.
SKL2. Students will compare the similarities and differences in groups of organisms.
Kindergarten Lessons
October/November – Stained Glass Leaves – Students will collect various types of leaves and group leaves based on similarities and differences. Next students will create their own window creation to enjoy their leaves all year long.
December – Old fashion Christmas decorations, identify different types of Christmas trees
January, February, March – Animals: Likeness and differences. Students will group animals by similarities and differences.
April, May - Students will observe Butterflies in our butterfly garden. Students will compare different types of seeds and create a seed wheel.
June, July, August – Living & Nonliving Nature Hunt. Students will collect items on a nature hunt and group them as living and nonliving.
First Grade Standards
S1CS4. Students will use the ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological matters.
S1CS6: Students will be familiar with the character of scientific knowledge and how it is achieved.
S1L1. Students will investigate the characteristics and basic needs of plants and animals.
First Grade Lesson
October and November – What is a Habitat? Students will observe Box Turtles and identify basic needs of a turtle. Students will describe how the habitat of a turtle is different from a bird. Students will work together to create a bird’s nest.
December - Christmas Around the World- Students will get to see decorations for countries around the world.
January, February, March – How Old is that Tree? During a nature hike students will look at different trees. Students will measure the distance around a tree to help determine the age of a tree. Students will also look at the rings of a tree that has been cut down and compare their findings.
April, May – Life Cycle of a Plant
June, July, August – Clean or Unclean Water? Using the Scientific Process, student will predict whether water is clean or unclean.
Second Grade Standards
S2CS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works.
S2CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities.
S2CS5. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.
S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.
Second Grade
October, November – Life cycle of an Animals
December – Recycle & Reuse – Old Fashion Decorating
January, February, March- Why do leaves Change Color?
April and May - Students will observe stages of a plant’s life cycle and identify the parts of a plant. Students will have the opportunity to plant their seed in our garden.
June, July, August - Creating a beaver dam. Students will predict the results and impact a beaver dam will have on a stream. Students will then create a beaver dam to test their hypothesis.
Third Grade Standards
S3CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures.
S3CS8. Students will understand important features of the process of scientific inquiry.
S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
S3E2. Students will investigate fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago.
S3L1. Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat.
S3L2. Students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment.
Third Grade Lesson
October, November – Geology 101 – Students will collect rocks and group them based on color, hardness, luster, texture, and magnetism. Students will observe different layers of soil.
December Recycle and Reuse – Old Fashion Decorating. Students will brainstorm ideas and ways we recycle and reuse ordinary items for decorating.
January, February, March – Animal Habitats
April and May- Stream Project- Students will collect samples of water and organisms found in a stream. Next students will observe, identify, and record the type and number of visible organisms found.
June, July, August –Water Pollution – Can you see it?
Below is a sample schedule of your farm visit. There will be no more than 30
students at a station a time.
